Elaboration of solid waste management concept with the aim of reducing negative impact on water in Leova, Moldova

The target of this project is to develop a regional-based systemic approach to minimize negative impacts of solid wastes on human health and environment.  Our activities will be aimed at systemic support of effective and economically reasonable waste management in Leova region, Central Moldova. The conceptual model of waste management will be elaborated with respect to future application in other regions of Moldova.

During first phase of project, a complex analysis of current situation of waste management was carried out. These analytical activities were based on local inquiry and technical research.  Outcomes from the first phase will serve as feed data to conceptual activities.

In the first step, conceptual activities and methodology for waste management conceptual planning at regional level were drafted.  This methodology will be applicable not only in Leova region, but also in other Moldovan regions.

During the second period of the project implementation, the concept of waste management was prepared. In practical terms, reconstruction and re-cultivation of selected landfill and additionally demonstration projects have been realized.  Internal part of the project activities is education of local experts and awareness raising focused on regional and national authorities.
